~ Ethical ~ I was asked a question yesterday, a very thoughtful one and so I thought I should share my reply. I was asked about the ethics of Sixty Sheep & how our stock are reared. ‘Our mission is to provide sustainable meat, and actually I’m a pretty big believer in eating less meat (less fast, processed meat) and more good quality meat which as you say has been well reared. I like to think all our sheep are happy. They free range over many acres. They’re brought in to be maintained or if they have any issues and during tupping but otherwise we try to let them ‘be’ as much as possible. They forage on what’s on the land, we don’t grain feed so I can happily say they are 100% grass fed.’ We think we provide a natural life for them, they are all healthy & live a stress free life. ~ 2020 Food Promises ~ Actually any promises you make to yourself, this year, next year, in 20 years’ time. Sometimes we can make internal promises to ourselves which can be unrealistic, to anyone who knows me, I’m a sheep farmer yes, but also an international showjumper. Well, maybe when I dream. Sometimes when I think about food choice promises, nourishment promises, the quality of what you put into your body promises. I believe it should be a standard promise. An unwritten service level agreement between you and your body. I promise to feed you what you need, I promise to nourish you, reward you. I promise to eat a variety. I promise to treat you on occasion. How about I also promise you QUALITY. I promise to feed you QUALITY over quantity. I promise to think about my consumption, about my waste, about how I combine my foods. Over the coming months in the lead up to lambing I’m going to concentrate on some topics to help focus your mind of what it is to nourish, to enjoy, to share, to socialise and to appreciate ‘premium feeds’ over ‘fast mass produced foods’. ~ “It’s not always fine dining, but darling its fine” ~ We absolutely love entertaining. I save ‘the good cutlery’ set for when we have guests over. You’ll find hidden coffee cups stashed in various locations around the house so I can hand someone a ‘hair free’ clean cuppa when they come over. We’re very typical though, if you’re not scheduled the house is upside down. Wellies everywhere, living out of the dishwasher, condiments next to the mulled wine. ‘It’s a country kitchen’ I can hear myself trying to convince my sister (and myself). I have a very vivid memory of when one of my oldest friends came to visit. A cold winter’s day, from Devon they both drove. My other half under strict instructions we were going for a walk to enjoy the views & show them our idyllic spot. However it wasn’t long before we were at our local pub with gin in hand watching the rugby. Having prepped Sixty Sheep leg of lamb earlier that day, we returned to a rich slow cooked lamb dinner, with the delicious smell of rosemary and garlic filling the house as we walked in. Slow cooked for 5 hours in a deep garlic, rosemary and red wine jus, we added creamy mash potato, broccoli, multi-coloured carrots & parsnips. To say it was an indulgence would be an understatement. It is one of the biggest pleasures in life to share your home & your food with the people you love. Fill your life with laughter. Fill your rooms with life and share as much genuine love with the people you adore. “It’s not always fine dining, but darling its fine”.

~ Nourish ~ The definition: 'to provide people or living things with food in order to make them grow and keep them healthy.' Do you #nourish your body with what it needs to grow & be healthy? And this is not about the macros, this isn’t mathematic, systematic or regimented. This is about making a conscious decision to switch up something quick, easy & fast for something well balanced, seasonal and of course nourishing. Choosing Feeds with flavour. Feeds that warm your heart and your home. Feeds that fill you from the bottom of your belly, that carry flavour signatures throughout your home to entice your tribe to eat. Call me old fashioned but my Nans Sunday lamb lunch could see me setting the table at 11am, desperate for it to get served up as soon as it was ready. She knew all her neighbours, from local farmers to Sue who only moved in two days ago. Believe me, I don’t think history has shown us our parents or grandparents got it spot on. But our dinners were always considered, they were varied & I never had anything to scrape. They offered a very real, long-lasting taste experience, my Mum fed a small army on pittance. To all the #mums #nans #aunts #dads #uncles and new age #Grandads for getting nourishment right, you are setting your tribe up for the future. #hatsofftoyou.
